Challenge: West Penn Allegheny Health System retention efforts include a recognition program for employees based on years of service at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 35, and 40+. To provide better service to their employees and streamline administration of the program, the client looked to NAS for a more efficient way of presenting gift items and handling the order process. The program needed to accommodate eight different entities (six hospitals, primary care network and the corporate entity). The program was designed to offer multiple choices with a widely varied gift selection.

Solution: NAS recommended a print piece to notify employees of the award and the gift selection. Our design took the form of a small folder that housed a specific set of inserts. This approach allowed maximum flexibility and customization, so that each employee would receive a letter from their specific facility and only the gifts appropriate for their level of service. The client could easily remove an insert if a specific gift changed. The order process was also automated and made much simpler. NAS developed a secure website for employees to make their gift selection. By typing in their name and other identifying information to verify eligibility, they were logged into the system and greeted by the CEO's congratulatory message.

Results: West Penn appreciated the cleaner, more appealing look and the ability to personalize the program for each employee. They were also impressed with the greater efficiency that resulted. Of the 1,206 employees eligible for service awards in 2002, 931 ordered gifts from the website. This was a 20% increase from prior years.
