Challenge: Groundbreaking for the Medical Center of the Rockies (MCR) signaled the beginning of a new era that will provide patients in a three-state region with easier access to specialized medical care. Scheduled to open in February 2007 in Loveland, MCR will be owned by Poudre Valley Health System (PVHS) of Fort Collins, and Regional West Medical Center, a hospital in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. As a recognized Magnet hospital and an employer of choice, Poudre Valley Health System is offering current employees the opportunity to transfer to the new facility first. That, in turn, has created vacancies in the main facility, a place that has been known for its low vacancy rates and high employee retention.

Solution: NAS Recruitment Communications developed a focused recruitment method that enabled Poudre Valley Health System to court and interview qualified candidates in a combination of business and social events in less than two days. The "Exclusive Invitation-Only Event" allowed the client to showcase employer of choice attributes, while conducting extensive formal/ informal interviews of pre-selected/pre-qualified candidates. Inviting ONLY qualified candidates to the event proved to be an efficient, cost-effective way to introduce the healthcare system's culture to many targeted individuals at one time.

By conducting a preliminary client needs assessment and a review of behavior standards and competency models, NAS was able to analyze data and develop a basic competency model/questions and a behavioral interview model to use for pre-screening/pre-qualifying purposes. The NAS solution included mining, sourcing and recruiting of RNs for the event. Initial interviews assessed skill level, ability to attend the event and openness to Poudre Valley's opportunities. Candidates who fit the initial criteria were processed to a second behavioral/cultural interview conducted by a recruiting RN. Reference and licensure verifications were performed for all candidates who passed the second interview.

Results: By creating the "Exclusive Invitation-Only Event," NAS was able to bring in targeted (ICU/OR/ER), pre-screened/pre-qualified nursing candidates in an innovative, controlled environment that showcased the client in a way that far exceeded expectations. The event included department tours, director-level interviews, a group dinner, a hotel stay and a wrap-up breakfast with the CNO and the VP of HR in attendance.

NAS delivered six pre-qualified/pre-screened candidates to the event in a very short period of time. Although client needs changed slightly during the project lifecycle, the client was able to extend offers to all six candidates. The result: five hires (one decline due to another relocation opportunity).

HR Director, Candy Pruett, told the Denver Area Healthcare Recruiter Association (DAHCRA), "We did an onsite, invitation-only recruitment event that invited specialty nurses to our facility for a full day of interviewing and touring. We provided lodging and community tours. We hired five RNs from this, and if we had pushed the event date further out, we would have had more. The RNs were pre-screened to meet our managers' expectations. Both candidates and managers loved the event! NAS helped plan and run the event, which took the workload off my staff, and the cost was less than a headhunter."
